    3Deep Supers

star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
3Deep SupersRequire the 3Deep core rules. When I first published 3Deep in 2016, I intended to release the setting-neutral rules and follow it up quickly with splatbooks that tweaked the game to fit each setting and genre.I produced two books, one of which I wrote myself, and one was an adaption of No GM’s Sky by Todd Zircher. Ironically, supers was supposed to be the first book. Mt roleplaying education started with D&D B/X and then moved through Champions, Traveller, Runequest, and Rolemaster, and the real eye-opener was when we started roleplaying Steve Jackson’s Car Wars. That told me that any game that had a character could be roleplayed. All you needed were some rules for conflict resolution. If you are familiar with 3Deep, you may have noticed a healthy dose of the original Car Wars in those rules as well as some Champions and Traveller. Our early influences stay with us, or mine did. This book takes the core of 3Deep and introduces rule tweaks and suggestions to bend it to the Supers genre. The biggest addition is powers. The essential elements of superheroes are righting wrongs outside the system and the secret identity. Although plenty of heroes break those elements and are either publicly recognized, Ironman is an example, or have their own agenda that has little to do with righting wrongs, Batman Dark Knight strays into this territory. These are the exceptions, and they work because of the accepted norms. Every literary style has subverted its own established norms.I grew up watching The Lone Ranger, Zorro, and Commando Cody the Rocketman on Saturday morning TV. These were masked heroes with skills rather than superpowers, and the rocket suit could be worn by anyone. These heroes appeared superhuman, and they put themselves in danger to protect the innocent while protecting their own identity behind a mask. For real superhuman heroes, Marvel and DC comics were the ultimate source. These mixed influences from any genre, time, and culture. You could have an Amazonian fighting alongside an alien, alongside a magician, and it all just worked.Lone heroes were just as common as teams, and as a roleplayer who had discovered D&D, a team of heroes was about the only genre where a classic party of heroes was reflected in the source media. Most swords and sorcery books were about a single hero, the Conans and Elrics, but superheroes could be alone, in a team, or move between teams.

    Easier Mystery Play

star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
Every game is a mystery or contains mystery elements. Whether you are investigating an eldritch horror or trying to find a secret door. As a GM, it can be very frustrating when your players fail to grasp your obvious trail of clues or cannot roll a successful searching skill test to save their own lives. This book hopes to guide you through running more successful mystery adventures and doing so with less effort spent on GM prep. This book grew out of a run of blog articles I ran in 2021, and they grew out of a video series I posted on YouTube and the comments I received from my solo community. You may be new to solo roleplaying or an old hand; either way, we all run our solo games uniquely. This means that we rarely see how other people are doing it. This book contains tips and advice that I have picked up over the years that I have incorporated into keeping my game notes.I talk about analog, pen and paper methods, online, digital, and mobile tools, and about using audio, video, and VTTs as ways of recording your solo scenes and games. From simple lists of scenes to bullet journals to aspiring to be the next Me, Myself, and Die, there are tons of options for how we record our games. This book was requested by one of my patrons to address their own needs. I am now sharing it publicly so others may gain some ideas from it.This is a 50 page paperback (or PDF).

Hard S.F. Worldbuilding Cookbook #2: Supernova

star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
star icon star icon star icon star icon star icon
Hard SF Worldbuilding Cookbook #2: Supernova A how-to guide for writers and roleplayers Start with your story. Choose locations, find situations, and inspire novel prompts as you need them. Have the science behind them at your fingertips, when you want it. Inspiration first, then worldbuilding. The Hard SF Worldbuilding Cookbooks:Written for worldbuilders who want their in-world science to be more than just technobabble, the Hard SF Cookbooks are focussed on story and dramatic possibilities rather than just being ‘here’s the science, now go create’. Each starts with a guide for the aspiring space traveller - where to go and how to avoid being fried, zapped, and/or blasted - then pulls out to the artist, writer and GM point-of-view, with lookup tables so you can start from the trope or scenario you want, find new story hooks, and work back towards the science behind them. #2: Supernova: They are the biggest, most devastating, explosions in the universe: Lasting for months, unleashing more energy and radiation than an entire galaxy, supernova have shaped galactic history (and, in some regions, effectively ended it). If your characters find themselves threatened by one you'll need to know: How far do they have to run? Is there anywhere they can hide? And is there any technology, anywhere in the galaxy, that might protect them? Using a series of simple, flexible look-up tables, this book sets out the range, lethality, and timing of a supernova's effects - as well as detailed notes on the visuals and experiances that accompany them, their millennia long aftermath, and countermeasures for endangered spacecraft and planets. Putting storytelling ahead of technical detail, but with plenty of in-depth material for those wanting to do a deeper dive, this second installment in the Hard SF Worldbuilding Cookbooks series covers:Immediate effects of a supernova on space vehicles - Page 8Delayed effects of a supernova on space vehicles - page 9Immediate effects of a supernova on an Earth-like planet - page 10Delayed effects of a supernova on an Earth-like planet - page 11Aftermath effects of a supernova - page 12Supernova prediction - page 13Tech and industrial levels - page 15Use of Traveller tech periods and Karderschev levels - page 15Effects of radiation doses - page 16Countermeasures for space vehicles - page 18Countermeasures for Earth-like planets - page 20 John Freeman is PhD physicist, who acts as advisor for world-builders when they want some real world details to help their creations. This series owes its existence to the GMs, writers, artists, and even historians who collaborated with him (and who keep him in touch with the real world, and supply him with snacks).

Hard S.F. Worldbuilding Cookbook #4.1: The Candle Flame : A star system with a flame yellow sun

It's like finding a home - the neighbourhood has to be right for you: Is it close to the shops? How does the neighborhood look?Is that smoke? So the aim of this booklet is to give you a run-down on a realistic star system, centred on a tiny, red dwarf, sun - which looks more ruddy yellow than red when seen up close - and particularly of how it would be experienced from an Earth-like planet in its habitable zone. The dwarf star, also known as a type M5, is the smallest and most common type of full fledged star in our galaxy, living longer than any other. It’s prone to massive solar storms and planet-scorching flares, but also offers a system of worlds so close packed that even travelling between them with today's chemical rockets would take days rather than months or years. Beyond the broad themes you can set specific details to your needs - for example the number and type of other planets and the galactic neighbourhood. The booklet goes into: Sky colour: p7Plant colour: p7 Visual size of planets: p10Other sky phenomena: p8Travel within the system: p6Opportunities: p7Hazards: p7Prompts: p8Visuals from an Earth-like planet in the habitable zone: p7Combining star systems into clusters: p4How to go off book with your sun and sky colours: p5Planets to populate your system with: (E.G.
