Fast pace combat and enjoyable table top, money well spent.
Horde Wars: Basic wonderfully lives up to its name. It’s basic; it knows what it is, what it does, and it does it well. It also does not hand-hold the reader. It assumes the reader knows what a roleplaying game is, and dives right into the rules. There’s no “what is a roleplaying game?” chapter, and no introduction to a world. Even better, there is no political, social, or philosophical pontification about how to play, who to play with, or other such unsolicited admonishment.
The system itself is a solid breath of fresh air, as the use of a D12 instead of a D20 makes ability checks for more reliable and predictable. Combat is streamlined and very swift. Horde Wars introduces another mechanic in combat that I haven’t seen in any other RPGs I’ve played; actions outside for your turn (called “maneuvers” in game). Maneuvers are not as cumbersome as one might think, and it does solve the problem of players having nothing to do in between turns. Everyone has to pay attention. Players also enjoy, right from level 1, the feeling of being “big damn heroes.” The class system has each player delightfully combining TWO classes to make a unique class, and there are enough core classes for MANY interesting combinations. Even playing a “wizard” at level 1, I had abilities that made me feel powerful, rather than other games where characters feel in danger of dying at every single combat from a bad die roll. This isn’t to say that there is no danger in the game. I can be plenty deadly. It does, however, feel like even beginning heroes can accomplish a great deal, or exhibit some very impressive powers.
This book has a full bestiary, magic item, and treasure tables galore. It contains everything for a full experience of the game. Unlike other basic sets that give you a small “taste” or “tease” of these things, Horde Wars: Basic gives you a full plate to consume. This game is PACKED with content, and it’s a paltry $5 to purchase…considering a meal at a restaurant runs twice that, you’re getting a top-notch value for your dollar.
I can’t wait to see what Horde Wars: Advanced has to offer!
I plan to write a more in-depth review at some point ,but let me say this game is fantastic. it has captured the old school feels with more modern mechanics. The combat is intense and can be deadly. You get some character building oppportunities ,but not as much as 3rd ed DnD which isa huge plus. I’ve played this gamne with the authors a few times and ust say it is excellent.
I have tried this game several times this year and love it. I like that combat moves at a fast pace. The career pairings give a good mix of character combinations. Stat blocks for creatures are practical and easy to parse. I look forward to Horde Wars Advanced!
